Apr. 17, 2014 Facebook Update

Update on the baby (a lot of medical consults happened this week):

Short version: birth at Vidant around May 29, heart surgery at 2-6 months old at Duke.

Medical version: our third heart echo yesterday led to the discovery of a double-outlet right ventricle (DORV) in addition to the other issues previously identified (complete AVSD, right atrial isomerism, pulmonary stenosis). Just as a refresher, right atrial isomerism means he has mirrored organs (two right lungs, two right kidneys), stomach and liver on the right instead of left and center, and likely no spleen. None of that necessarily needs surgery... Everything revolves around the heart right now. Heart surgery is likely to be sooner (2 mos) than later (6 mos). Other surprises may be in store at birth (malrotated organs, asplenia, etc) ... Vidant should be able to handle that if it comes. Duke has a group of solid surgeons and a pediatric cardiac ICU that we toured Tuesday and we feel that his level of care there will be second to none when it's time to have the surgery. Whether he has more surgeries or not depends on a lot of factors, but we hope it's just one major one. He weighs in at a little over 4 lbs currently and is kicking like crazy... We're thankful we have a fighter on our hands! (And no, no baby name yet. We're working on it.) Continue to pray, please!
