Day 4-rough day

Keller had a good night and was resting when we arrived this morning. Once when he was fussing they had even let him get some pedialyte in a bottle to see if maybe he was hungry. He hasn't had a bottle since August so I was surprised and happy that he had taken in about 10 milliliters. As Phillip and I sat as his bedside his oxygen that had been in the 80s dropped even lower when he got upset. It continued to drop and hung around the 60s and down into the 50s. They did a rapid response of sorts and troubleshooted all sorts of things. And Echo of his heart showed that the heart was not causing the issue. A chest x ray ruled out the lungs as the problem. It ended up being something easy. There was a problem with some of his oxygen tubing and he was not getting the oxygen his body was needing which turned into a cycle of him needing more air and his oxygen saturation to look so poor. After the mechanical problem was solved he returned to his pink color. He had gotten some pain medication during the episode so soon he was asleep.

After he had rested and remained calm for a while we felt that we should go see Norah and eat something too.

This evening, after we had gotten back, he woke up crying. Dad was at the bedside with me and from Keller's cues he was having gas pain and needed his tube vented. I did that but the crying continued. Soon we look up and his heart rate was 240. His heart had changed from normal sinus rhythm to super ventricular tachycardia. They had to get an EKG to be sure of the rhythm so they could give the medicine that would fix it. Once they could give the medicine necessary he went back to sinus rhythm. He stayed around 240 for about 10 minutes. Since then he has been pretty zonked. We did just find out that his potassium has been depleted, most likely due to Lasix. Low potassium can cause changes in rhythms. Hopefully that was the root cause and there will be no more. If he does it again he will be given a beta blocker and if it is consistent he might have to start taking one on s regular basis.

We are praying  that
1. His pain can be in control to prevent him getting upset and lowering his oxygen.
2. he remains in normal sinus rhythm
3. His lungs clear so breathing is comfortable and easy.
4. He can have awake time without pain.
